LNER GER E4 East Anglia Railway Christmas Card by Artist Malcolm Root FGRA

One of the oldest classes of locomotive still in service when British Railways was formed in 1948 was the Eastern Region's E4. First built in 1891, the class (originally the GER T26) had long been superseded by other types of locomotive yet still gave sterling service until 1959. By this time they could only be found on small local passenger services, as seen here, and light freight in the East Anglian region that had been their home for nearly seventy years.

,p>This one is seen on a cold winters' day some time in the early to mid 1950s. One locomotive has beenpreserved and is currently on loan to the North Norfolk Railway Museum.
