National Service Birthday Greetings Card with British Army Bedford QLT trucks by Transport Artist Malcolm Root FGRA
Up until 1960 military service was compulsory in Britain with all men aged 18 expecting to be called up. A deferment for education or such could be asked for to a maximum age of 21 whereupon three years in one of the three services followed.
For the lucky ones, National Service brought the possibility of travel to foreign parts and here we see a Royal Army Service Corps Detachment with their Bedford QLT's being prepared for the journey home from some warm, sunny clime. The QLT was equipped with a lengthened body when compared to the standard QL with seats for carrying troops
