Though best known for his Pacifics, Sir Nigel Gresley designed a number of other excellent locomotives, one of these being the B17 class of 4-6-0 These engines were to prove superbly reliable and fast on routes such as the East Anglian lines out of Liverpool Street.
The B17 class were, for the most part, named after stately homes, army regiments and football clubs, becoming known to enthusiasts as “Sandringhams” or “Footballers”.
