Railway Art Blank Birthday and Greetings Card of a London, Brighton & South Coast Railway Marsh Atlantic by Malcolm Root FGRA

Many of the locomotives from the earlier part of the 20th Century are absolutely stunning and are well represented by this Marsh Atlantic. Built for the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway from 1911, the Marsh Atantics came in two guises, the earlier H1 designed by Marsh himself and the H2, which was built to a similar design, with improved superheater, by his assistant, Lawson Billinton. The Atlantic wheel arrangement of 4-4-2 would lose its appeal not long after the introduction of these locomotives as more powerful 4-6-0 and 4-6-2 locomotives would be introduced. These stunning locomotives carried on until the early part of the 1950s and the last of the class, 32424 Beachy Head was the last British Atlantic in service. While the locomotive was scrapped, a reconstruction effort was undertaken in the mid-1980s, made possible by the discovery of a suitable boiler. This locomotive, carrying the same name and number as the last survivor entered service in 2024, one of the greatest achievements in Railway Preservation and Reconstruction.

This railway birthday and greeting card would appeal to anyone with a love of the Southern Railway or Beachy Head
