Malcolm Root FGRA Railway Art Print featuring Holden F5 Class tank locomotive
From Hustle to Serenity - The Great Eastern Railway's tank locomotives
The Great Eastern Railway served a region limited in industrial capacity but rich in agricultural produce. From its London Liverpool Street terminus, it also operated the most intensive commuter service in the country. To meet these demands, the railway’s designers produced an evolving series of increasingly powerful tank locomotives — from the diminutive R24 and S56 classes (later LNER J67/8/9), through the M15 (LNER F4 & F5), to the robust L77 (LNER N7).
As newer engines entered service, the older classes found new purpose on rural branch lines and in local yards. This transition is beautifully captured in Malcolm Root’s railway art print, which contrasts the quiet rhythm of the countryside with the bustle of the city. Here, an F5 tank locomotive hauls a modest two-coach local train, while four magnificent Clydesdales work the fields — a serene reminder of the coexistence between steam and agriculture. Only a few more years lay ahead before the F5 would be replaced by diesel traction and the Clydesdales by tractors.
