Malcolm Root FGRA Railway Art Print featuring Merchant Navy Class Locomotive 35007 "Aberdeen Commonwealth"

Bulleids Redefinied - The Rebuilt Merchant Navy Class

Oliver Bulleid's range of air-smoothed Pacifics brought a new level of power to the Southern Region upon their introduction in 1941 and both the Merchant Navy Class and later Battle of Britain/ West Country light Pacifics would prove their worth over the next two and a half decades. Despite this, all the classes suffered mechanical problems caused by their novel features and to remedy this all thirty Merchant Navy class locomotives and sixty of the light pacifics were rebuilt to a more traditional design. This process resulted in one of the finest. most handsome steam locomotives to run on British metals and those that are preserved are firm favourites with rail enthusiasts today.

Merchant Navy class Pacific 35007 'Aberdeen Commonwealth' is seen attracting spotters at the end of the platform. Although approaching the of its life, the locomotive looks smart and still retains its distinctive nameplates.
