The mixed traffic B1 can be seen as Edward Thompson's most successful design during his tenure as CME of the LNER. 410 were built, with 40 being named after breeds of antelope.

Two locomotives have been preserved, 61306 and 1264. The latter locomotive is the subject for this painting and is seen at Goathland on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway.
