Southern Region Lord Nelson Class Christmas Card by Railway Artist Robin Pinnock

Two superb classes of locomotive are seen passing one another while representing two very different eras of loco design. The top loco is Lord Nelson class 4-6-0 30851 Sir Francis Drake on the famous 'Cunarder' train from Waterloo to Southampton docks, whereby passengers would embark, most probably on the Queen Elizabeth, Queen Mary or Mauretania II for passage to the USA. These large locomotives were built in small numbers and performed a great many express duties, even when superceeded by the Bulleid Light Pacifics and Merchant Navy classes.

The locomotive in the foreground is a BR Standard 4-6-0 4MT. Smaller in stature than the Nelson, the class were built in large numbers and served on all regions of BR in the steam era

Robin Pinnock's Christmas Card would be ideal for any Southern Railway enthusiast or steam lover in general
