Southern Region Schools Class Christmas Card by Railway Artist Robin Pinnock
Richard Maunsell’s masterpiece and the most powerful 4-4-0 in Europe, the ‘Schools’ Class was built for the Southern Region in the 1930s. Superb engines from the start, they performed better than many of the 4-6-0 engines on both the Southern and its rivals. Standing at Basingstoke with a passenger working in later B.R days, the loco, 30926 ‘Repton’, is joined by West Country class 34105 ‘Swanage’. Happily both locomotives are now preserved.
