Roger H. Middlebrook GAvA

Aviation Birthday and Greetings Cards

Roger was born in Huddersfield in January 1929 and showed great artistic talent from an early age. After studying at the Slade School of Fine Art and National Service, he moved to Sweden in the early 1950s. While in Sweden he worked for a number of companies, most notably Volvo, as a technical illustrator before working as a freelance artist, concentrating on landscape and portraiture.

After 13 years in Sweden, he returned to England in 1965, now specialising in Architectural illustration. He began painting aviation subjects in 1990 and would join the Guild of Aviation Artists a year later.

Around the same time, he was contacted by The Lledo Collectables company to illustrate their "Days Gone" and "Vanguard" catalogues of model cars. Roger would complete a large number of illustrations for Jack Odell's company, including several covers, his last being completed in the early 2000s.

Roger's painting ability and his mastery of the Swedish language went a long way to his success in Scandinavia, where many of his paintings hang. In 1995, he was honoured with a solo exhibition at the Swedish Air Force Museum and his works have graced a large number of Scandinavian Aviation titles, many written by his friend, Norwegian Aviation Historian, Cato Guhnfeldt.

Roger received numerous artistic awards and trophies during his life, but is best known as the winner of Aviation Painting of the Year no less than five times in 1999, 2001, 2002, 2004 and 2011.

Roger passed away in 2024 and we are currently selling the last of our stock of his greetings cards.
