In one of John Austin's most evocative paintings we see 60078 "Night Hawk", a Gresley A3 pacific built as an A1 in 1924 and rebuilt to the standard seen here in 1944. She would gain a double chimney and 'German' smoke deflectors in 1959 before final withdrawal in 1962. At the time of the painting, the locomotive was based at Haymarket.
