Spitfire Blank Birthday Card – 19 Squadron Supermarine Spitfire Mk.I by Aircraft Artist Charles J. Thompson GAvA
Duxford has a very long association with the Supermarine Spitfire, being home to the very first squadron to receive them; 19 Squadron commanded by Sqn Ldr Henry Cozens. The first Spitfire to arrive at RAF Duxford on 4th August 1938 was K9789 and it is this aircraft that is portrayed here.
This historic aircraft was to remain in front-line service until 1941. From here she went to 61 Operational Training Unit and in 1943 became a static airframe at a technical training school. She was finally scrapped in 1945.
The first Spitfires had numerous features which would quickly disappear from later batches of the Mk.I, including the two-bladed propeller, flat-sided canopies and a pair of guns that protruded past the leading edge of the wing. The Spitfire Legend had begun though and today, remarkably, Spitfires still fly from Duxford.
