John Austin - Croal Viaduct - LMS Black 5 (W)
Railway Train Steam Locomotive Birthday Card featuring Black 5 4500 from a painting by John Austin GRA
The artist enjoys painting the atmosphere of the industrial north as it was before the 1970s and also grand architecture, such as bridges and large buildings.
In this painting, John Austin recreates a scene from the pre-motorway days when steam-hauled freight could be up to a 1000-tons in weight and needed the finest motive power to get them moving. One of the most successful designs of steam locomotive, Stanier’s ‘Black 5’ was eqully at home on a passenger or freight and this example, number 45000 would be saved for the national collection, now held at York Railway Museum.
