Kevin Walsh - Britain at War - 1940s Street Scene
1940s Street Scene with MG TA and Policeman by artist Kevin Walsh
Britain’s streets were a true jumble during the war years with armed forces personnel from all the Allied nations mixing with the locals, much to the delight of young girls and much to the chagrin of their fathers.
In a time when cars and vehicles were taken off the roads, many American personnel were able to use petrol from bases to fuel their cars, in this case an MG TA. For the children that either returned from Evacuation or never left (not a great number), the war was an adventure and here we see several youngsters making the most of the ubiquitous Anderson Shelter, while their mother talks to the local ‘Bobby’, complete with tin helmet and gas mask case.
