1950s Railway Birthday Card by Railway Artist Malcolm Root FGRA
The 2-4-2 Tank Locomotives of classes F4 and F5 had been designed for the Great Eastern Railway as early as 1884. These small engines provided the power for suburban routes around London until the early 1920s when they were supplanted by more modern equipment.
These faithful workhorses continued in service though for another 35 years, supplying the motive power for many of the small local trains that ran throughout Essex, Suffolk and Norfolk at the time.
