The End of the Line- The London Transport Boneshaker tram
The last of the original "Boneshaker" trams left London's streets on 5th July 1952, to be replaced by more comfortable and flexible buses. Thus ended a service that could trace its heritage back to the horse-drawn trams of the 1860s and the introduction of electric trams in 1901. The post war years were a time for modernising, but seeing some of the last remaining trams on Westminster Bridge reminds us of the days when these vehicles would have been a mainstay of London and the surrounding area.
Over seventy years since their retirement and trams have made a triumphant return to London's streets, along with those of many other cities and their cleanliness and comfort have seen them replace buses in several areas. How the tables can turn!
