LNER BR A3 class Blank Birthday Greetings Card by Philip D. Hawkins FGRA showing 60106 Flying Fox
After the improved performance shown by the A3 locomotives, the decision was taken to modify Sir Nigel Gresley's earlier A1 locomotives to the same standard. The locomotives of the A3 class, of which there were eventually 78, became the workhorses of the East Coast Main Line services from the 1930s right through to the 1950s. Even into the 1960s with the advent of newer Thompson and Peppercorn engines, these now elderly locos could put in a good turn of speed.
Here, 60106 'Flying Fox', generally accepted as one of the best of the class, is seen at full tilt over the metals she had been built for.
