Philip D. Hawkins - Flying Fox - Flying
Sir Nigel Gresley's A1 locomotives were to be re-engineered later on in life to A3 standard. These locomotives became the workhorses of the East Coast Main Line services from the 1930s right through to the 1950s. Even into the 1960s with the advent of newer Thompson and Peppercorn engines these now elderly locos could put in a good turn of speed.
In Philip D. Hawkin's Railway Art birthday/ greeting card 60106 'Flying Fox', generally accepted as one of the best of the class is seen at full tilt over the metals she had been built for.
