Railway Steam Locomotive Christmas Card of Gresley A3 60071 Tranquil by Philip D. Hawkins FGRA FGRA
Tranquil had been built as Gresley A1 2570 in 1924, being re-built as an A3 at Doncaster in October 1944. As with the other A3 class locomotives, this lead to a considerable improvement in performance and the locomotive was not finally withdrawn until 1964, after travelling more than two million miles.
Highly capable locomotives, the A3 provided the backbone of East Coast Main-Line running, eventually numbering eighty locomotives. Even when faced with newer locomotives such as Gresley’s own A4 and Thompson and Peppercorn designs, the A3 were still able to hold their own in the timetable.
