Hawker Tempest Aviation Art Print by Darryl Legg
Hawker's Perfect Storm - The Tempest
The Hawker Tempest Mk.V was one of the finest piston-engined fighters of the Second World War. Introduced in 1944, it featured a powerful Napier Sabre engine and a redesigned wing that gave it superb low and medium-altitude performance. Fast, stable and heavily armed, the Tempest excelled in intercepting V-1 flying bombs and later dominated the skies over Northwest Europe. In the closing months of the war, it proved formidable against the latest German fighters, securing its place as one of the RAF’s most successful late-war aircraft.
Here, David 'Foob' Fairbanks piloting Hawker Tempest V NV943 is seen duelling with an Fw-190 D-9 of III/JG.54 in 1945. Fairbanks would have the highest number of aerial victories scored by any Tempest pilot excluding V-1 flying bombs
