As the ultimate version of the multi-role Tornado, the GR.4 replaced the GR.1 as the main strike aircraft of the RAF and is able to carry a much wider array of weaponry than its predecessor. As of 2014 the squadrons equipped with aircraft are based at RAF Lossiemouth and Marham, though 617 Squadron has just been disbanded, leaving four squadrons equipped with the type. Like its earlier stablemate, the GR.4 has also seen combat service, notably over Iraq, Afghanistan and most recently Libya.This superb piece by aviation artist Neil Hipkiss shows the aircraft in its element where it can still attain supersonic speed.
