Malcolm Root FGRA Railway Art Print featuring British Railways Experimental Diesel Locomotive 10202

British Railways locomotive 10202 was one of three pioneering diesel-electric mainline locomotives introduced in the early 1950s as part of Britain’s early move away from steam traction.

The brainchild of O.V.S Bulleid and designed before nationalisation, the three locomotives were built at Brighton and Ashford works with the last entering traffic in 1954. Powered by an English Electric diesel engine, the three locomotives initially worked on the Southern Region of BR before being transferred to the Midland in 1955. Operating primarily on express passenger services, the locomotives played an important role in proving diesel traction’s viability and numerous parts would go on to be used in the standard range of diesel-electric locomotives that were to follow. As prototype locomotives, the three sisters did not last long in service, all being retired by 1963.
