Stepping back in time to the 1930s and an apple green behemoth of a locomotive passes Wood Green signal box. The locomotive, 2001 Cock ‘o the North, was the first of a new powerful class, built specifically for the routes of northern England and Scotland. The largest passenger locos ever made in Britain, the P2 were not an overly successful design despite their size. The class would be thoroughly rebuilt in the 1940s into rather ungainly Pacifics.
Though none survived into preservation a new-build P2 is under construction as of 2023, to be know as 2007 'Prince of Wales'.
