Darryl Legg Aviation Art Print of the Kawasaki Ki-45 Toryu Japanes Heavy Fighter.

Rise of the Dragonslayer - Kawasaki Ki-45

Originally designed as a long-range escort fighter, the Ki-45 would find its niche countering the B-29 Bomber raids on the Japanese home islands.

Before this though, the aircraft would be modified with various armament fits and used to attack shipping and ground installations, especially around New Guinea.

When B-29 Superfotress raids began in June 1944, the type's heavy armament proved very effective, though it was not always able to attain sufficient height. Again, various armament fits were used, some pilots using the 37mm to great effect, while others preferred the upward firing twin 20mm mounting, similar to what was seen in Germany's Bf-110 nightfighters.

The aircraft shown comes from the 4th Sentai, one of the main users of the type during the homeland defence.
