Short Belfast Royal Air Force Aviation Art Print by Chris French FGAvA
Large Capacity, Small Numbers - The Short Belfast
The heavy-lift capability of the Short Belfast allowed it to deliver a wide array of artillery, armaments and vehicles. Initially suffering from suction drag problems which reduced performance, the aircraft was modified and cruising speed was increased from 275mph to 315mph.
The aircraft seen here is XR367 ‘Heracles’. This was the first Belfast delivered to the RAF , though the sixth off the production line. Delivered to 53 Sqn at Brize Norton in January 1966, the aircraft is depicted here later in its service life after the suction drag modifications had been made and the RAF had named the ten aircraft after mythical Greek giants.
