Darryl Legg Aviation Art Print portraying a Fairey Swordfish Floatplane
Eyes of the Fleet - The Fairey Swordfish Floatplane
Famous for its part in the destruction of the Italian fleet at Taranto in 1940 and the crippling of the German battleship Bismarck a year later, the Fairey Swordfish would also have an important, if less glamorous role as a reconnaissance aircraft. Both carrier-borne and shipborne aircraft could be used for this role, the shipborme aircraft being fitted with floats and getting airborne by way of a catapult.
Larger than other Fleet Air Arm shipborne aircraft, such as the Fairey Seaox, the Swordfish would equip the units aboard the Royal Navy's larger capital ships.
This Fairey Swordfish MK.I floattplane is from HMS Valiant and is seen on an evening sortie in July 1940.
