Airspeed Envoy Aviation Art Print by Darryl Legg
The Envoy was a twin-engined development of the earlier Courier and designed to carry six to eight passengers. The prototype first flew in June 1934, powered by a pair of 185hp Wolseley AR-9 radial engines. Airspeed were to produce three marks of the Envoy, and the aircraft would see service as far afield as South Africa, Czechoslovakia and Japan. The aircraft was also used by the King's Flight .
The Envoy seen here is G-AENA, flown by Max Findland and Ken Waller during the 1936 Schlesinger Africa Air Race. It is shown speeding south over Lake Tanganyika, Central Africa, on its way to Rand Airport, Germiston, South Africa. Sadly the day after the depicted scene, the aircraft was lost in a crash.
