Fairey Barracuda Aviation Art Print by Darryl Legg

Fleet Striker - The Fairey Barracuda

The Fairey Barracuda first flew as early as December 1940, but was initially found to be decidedly underpowered. The definitive wartime variant was the Mk.II, and this would be equipped with the Rolls Royce Merlin 32, rated at 1,640hp and driving a four-blade propeller. The first of 27 squadrons equipped with the type, 827 NAS, became operational in January 1943 and the aircraft would serve in both the European and Pacific theatres. While probably bettered by the Grumman Avenger, which the Royal Navy also used, the Barracuda was an important part in updating the Fleet's carrier-borne striking force in the later years of the war.

Here we see a Fleet Air Arm Fairey Mk.II Barracuda from 812 Squadron, HMS Vengeance in 1945
