Douglas C-53 Skytrooper Aviation Art Print by Darryl Legg

A Legend Goes To War - The C-47/ C-53

While the C-47 Skytrain is an extremely famous member of the Douglas DC-3 family, the C-53 Skytrooper is significantly less well known. The aircraft was built as a dedicated troop transporter developed directly from the DC-3 airliner. It thus had similarities to the C-47 Skytrain, but was built without the reinforced cargo floor, large cargo door and hoist attachment found on that aircraft. Not as versatile as the Skytrain, production of the Skytrooper would amount to only 380.

In Darryl Legg's print we see C-53 VH-CWA after having been bought by QANTAS. The aircraft retained its USAAF livery after its sale and even while on secondment to the RAAF for courier runs to Papua New Guinea. The aircraft is seen flying over the treacherous Owen Stanley Mountain range, Northern PNG, heading for Hollandia in 1945.
