SAAB S29 Tunnan Aviation Art Print by Darryl Legg

Sweden's Flying Barrel - The SAAB J/S 29 Tunnan

In Darryl's painting we see a Swedish Air Force S29 C Tunnan flying to the north of the city of Liepaja in Latvia. It is seen on a top secret photographic reconnaissance mission and comes in at low altitude over the Karosta canal and the "Red Army Bridge in 1958.

The Tunnan had been introduced into Swedish Air Force (Flygvapnet) service in 1951 with F13 wing and would serve in the fighter and reconnaissance roles as the J29 and S29 respectively; the fighter being built in several versions. While production ceased in 1956, the aircraft would be employed well into the 1960s, with the last being retired from frontline service in 1967. With their frontline careers over, some aircraft would find further employment until 1974 as target tugs.
