Avro Lancaster 617 Squadron Dambuster Aviation Art Limited Edition Print by Aviation Artist Darryl Legg
Flt.
Lt Hopgood knew there was only one way to save any of his
crew and, ordering them to abandon the aircraft, powered the struggling
Lancaster into a steep starboard climbing turn to gain altitude.
The aircraft had already been damaged by flak and the
run at target was done with the consent of his crew. Their bomb missed the
target and upon exploding destroyed the already crippled Lancaster. Two members
of Hopgood's crew survived however and were taken POW.
