The Shipborne Spotter - Aichi E13A "Jake"

The Aichi E13A, codenamed “Jake” by the Allies, was the Imperial Japanese Navy’s standard shipborne reconnaissance seaplane throughout much of World War II. Entering service in 1941, it was carried by cruisers, battleships, and seaplane tenders, providing vital intelligence and artillery spotting during Japan’s Pacific campaigns. With its long range, reliability, and ability to operate from both catapults and forward bases, the E13A became indispensable in naval operations from the Aleutians to the Indian Ocean. Over 1,400 were built, yet few survived the conflict, with only two wrecks existing today. Despite this, it remains a testament to Japan’s emphasis on maritime reconnaissance.
