Lockheed P-38 Lightning Aviation Art print by Darryl Legg
A Powerful Storm - The P-38 in the Pacific
With its twin-boom design and central nacelle, the Lockheed P-38 Lightning was one of the most iconic fighters of the Second World War. In the vast expanses of the Pacific, its long range, heavy armament, and speed made it the perfect escort and interceptor. The “Lightning” excelled in many roles, earning respect from both friend and foe, but it was as an air superiority fighter that it will forever be remembered. It was while flying the type that Richard Bong would achieve his 40th aerial victory and thus become the nation's highest scoring ace of the conflict. Tough, fast, and unmistakable, the P-38 became a symbol of American air power over the Pacific, while giving its pilots the reassurance of reliability with its two engines.
In Darryl's aviation art print, a pilot from the 80th ("The Headhunters") Fighter Squadron scrambles toward his Lockheed P-38G Lightning, "Jungle Queen".
