Kawanishi N1K Kyofu Japanese Aviation Art Print by Darryl Legg
The Finest Floatplane - The N1K "Rex"
Design of this fine looking aircraft was begun as early as September 1940 and initially incorporated such advanced features as a contra-rotating propeller. The first aircraft flew in May 1942, but progress was dogged with problems and the contra-rotating propeller idea was dropped for production models. By the time the aircraft entered service, the Japanese were in retreat and the role for which it had been envisioned no longer there. Less than 100 aircraft would be built before production ceased in early 1944, but the aircraft would form the basis for the N1K1 and N1K2 "George" landplanes, that must range as two of the best of their type fielded by the Japanese.
