Darryl Legg Aviation Art Print portraying a Gloster Meteor F.III

British Pioneer - The Gloster Meteor

The Gloster Meteor was Britain’s first jet fighter. The F.1 entered service with 616 Squadron RAF service in July 1944, defending southern England against V-1 flying bombs. Armed with four 20 mm cannon and twin Welland turbojets, it was fast but limited in endurance. The improved F.3 was introduced in December of that year and added a sliding canopy, increased fuel capacity and refinements. From the fifteenth aircraft F.3s gained Derwent engines and longer nacelles, improving performance. In 1945, 616 Squadron deployed F.3s to Belgium for air-defence duties, but they never encountered the Me 262 in combat, instead being used against ground targets.
