Darryl Legg Aviation Art Print of Royal Australian Air Force Dassault Mirage III
Mach 2 for Australia - The Dassault Mirage in RAAF service
Entering Royal Australian Air Force service in 1964, the French-designed Dassault Mirage III gave Australia its first true supersonic interceptor. Built under licence by the Government Aircraft Factory as the Mirage IIIO, it became the backbone of the RAAF’s air defence throughout the 1960s and 1970s. Sleek, delta-winged and capable of Mach 2 flight, the Mirage combined elegance with formidable speed and climb performance. Operating from bases across Australia and Southeast Asia, it provided a vital deterrent during the Cold War years. Replaced by the F/A-18 Hornet in the mid-1980s, the Mirage III remains one of the RAAF’s most iconic and beloved fighters.
Here, Dassault Mirage IIIs A3-89 & A3-24 of 75 SQN RAAF head South West after departing from Darwin, Northern Australia on a night intercept training mission.
