Midland Stalwarts - The Sulzer Type 4 / Class 45
The Thames Clyde express is seen behind a Sulzer Type 4, later Class 45. When the first members of what would become Class 44 were put into service in 1959 they were named after mountains and immediately received the nickname of 'Peaks'. This name would be universally applied to these and the later class 45 and 46. The Class 45, as seen here, was the main production version with 137 being ordered following the success of the pilot locomotives. As with the Class 44, the locomotives owed much to the pioneer LMS diesels 10000/1 and the Southern Railway 10201-03, but now had a power rating of 2,500hp instead of the earlier series' 2,300hp. They would serve the Midland Region well, being supplemented by the fifty-six Class 46 from 1961.
The Class 45 would be seen on numerous passenger and freight duties throughout their lives, with the last being retired in 1989.
