Philip D. Hawkins FGRA GWR / BR Castle Class 5045 'Earl of Dudley' Blank Birthday Greetings Card

A Castle fit for an Earl - Naming the Castles

The success of  the Great Western Railway's "Castle" class locomotives resulted in 171 being built. While most acquired names relating to their namesakes, a number received names pertaining to other subjects, though not all these names were carried from the outset. Among these names were Stars, British Army Regiments, WWII aircraft, GWR personalities, Abbeys and, most numerously, Earls,

5045 "Earl of Dudley" had originally entered service in 1936 as "Bridgwater Castle" and was renamed in 1937, being withdrawn in 1962.
