Part of the Great Western Railway's continuing appeal stems from the very individual character of the company's locomotives. Whether designed by Dean, Churchward, Collett or Hawksworth the locomotives were always distinctly GWR. The series of 'Prairie' tanks that served as the railway's main shunting engines and were ubiquitous on the system were great examples of this.
