Supermarine Spitfire Mk.22 Aviation Art Print by Darryl Legg

Peacetime Protector - The Spitfire with the Auxiliary Air Force

After the Second World War, the Spitfire continued to serve with both the RAF and the Royal Auxiliary Air Force for a number of years. With the RAuxAF, it provided emergency air defence and training through the reserve squadrons. Equipped with late marks, such as the Mk.22 and Mk.24, the aircraft were valued for their agility and helped bridge a time when jets could not be spared for the "Weekend Warriors".

603 Squadron returned to being an auxiliary squadron in 1946 and flew the Spitfire in its penultimate F.Mk.22 form until the Vampire arrived in 1951.
