Jim Clark Lotus 49 during the 1967 Italian Grand Prix Formula One Art Card by Stuart Booth
Spirit of the Sixties - classic race, classic track, classic era - a green and yellow Lotus - three world Champions, Jim Clark 1963 and 1965, Jack Brabham 1959, 1960 and 1966 and John Surtees 1964 plus seven Motorcycle World Championships - the flat out blast around Monza on a glorious late summer day.
Jim Clark, Lotus 49, in the closing stages of the 1967 Italian Grand Prix at Monza, leading Jack Brabham, Brabham BT24 and John Surtees, Honda RA300. In a classic race Clark had made up a whole lap on the leaders with a stirring comeback drive through the field, after having to pit due to a puncture. Then on the last lap the Lotus ran low on fuel to be overtaken by Brabham and Surtees only for Brabham to slide wide at the last corner giving Surtees the narrowest of victories, with Clark finishing third.
The Colin Chapman designed Lotus 49 introduced the Ford Cosworth DFV V-8 engine to Formula 1; the 49 raced competitively from 1967 to 1970, while the DFV engine powered 155 Grand Prix winners, the last as late as 1983.
