The Bailey Bridge - Royal Engineers

Although many British tanks left much to be desired, the engineers and other arms were well equipped. One of the most ingenious of all British inventions was the Bailey Bridge, a modular construction, easily portable bridge that could be built to whatever length or bridging weight required. The bridge could be built to either a 10, 20 or 40-ton classification and aided greatly in the speedy advances made across Europe in 1944

This military painting by Chris French is a tribute to the men of the Royal Engineers who made such advances a possibility.
