First of the Nighthawks - The Lockheed YF-117

Developed in secrecy during the late Cold War, the Lockheed YF-117 Nighthawk was the prototype that led to the world’s first operational stealth aircraft. Designed by Lockheed, the famous “Skunk Works”, it demonstrated revolutionary radar-evading technology that would define modern air combat. With its distinctive faceted surfaces and angular silhouette, the YF-117’s unusual appearance concealed its groundbreaking purpose — to penetrate heavily defended airspace undetected. First flown in the early 1980s, it paved the way for the production F-117A, which proved its worth in the skies over Iraq and Yugoslavia. To this day, the Nighthawk remains an enduring symbol of American ingenuity and stealth innovation.

Wearing an unusual camouflage scheme, the Lockheed YF-117 is seen on its second flight, flown by Hal Farley on 1 July, 1981. Groom Lake can be seen in the distance.
