Ocean Liner Art - Titanic Leaving Southampton
Wednesday 10th April 1912 and Titanic is manoeuvred out of Berth 44 to the cheers of the crowded dockside. White Star had invested a great deal in the promotion of the ‘World’s safest liner’ and were keen to see her undertake the maiden voyage after the postponement of the journey once previously.
John Stewart’s painting captures the air of excitement that must have filled the dockside that morning. She would stop at Cherbourg, France and Queenstown, Ireland before embarking on the Atlantic journey that she would never complete.
