The military transport of most western nations, the “Herk” or “Fat Albert” first flew in 1958. The RAF accepted their first C.Mk.1 into service in 1967 an by 1968 the Lyneham Wing had been formed with five squadrons.
Having been through numerous improvement programmes, the aircraft remains the main transport aircraft pending the successful trials of its successor, the Airbus A400M.
