Malcolm Root - 4498 Sir Nigel Gresley
Steam Railway Locomotive Birthday Card - Sir Nigel Gresley by Malcolm Root FGRA
It is only fitting that the locomotive to bare the name of Sir Nigel Gresley should be his greatest creation. Members of the class would revolutionise steam traction on the East Coast Main Line and hold the world speed record for steam on two occasions, 4468 Mallard maintaining the accolade to this day, 75 years after attaining it in 1938.
Out-shopped from Doncaster works in November 1937, 4498 served until February 1966 when she was preserved. Malcolm Root's Railway Steam Engine Birthday Card shows her some time in the 1970s on an excursion in Scotland.
