Sir Nigel Gresley by Malcolm Root FGRA - Steam Train Railway Locomotive Birthday Card
4498 Sir Nigel Gresley - Named for the man who designed the masterpiece.
It is only fitting that the locomotive to bare the name of Sir Nigel Gresley should belong to the class regarded as his greatest creation.
The A4 class of 4-6-2 locomotives would revolutionise express services on the East Coast Main Line and hold the world speed record for steam on two occasions, 4468 Mallard maintaining the accolade to this day, over 75 years since attaining it in 1938.
Out-shopped from Doncaster works in November 1937, 4498 served until February 1966 when she was preserved. Malcolm Root FGRA's Railway Steam Engine Birthday Card shows the locomotive on an excursion some time in the 1980s or early 1990s .
