North American X-15 NASA Aviation Art Limited Edition Print by Aviation Artist Darryl Legg

The U.S Air Force's X-Program of the late 1940s through 1960s pushed aviation technology to new heights and in the process brought fame to a number of its aviators and aircraft, beginning with Chuck Yeager and the X-1 in 1947.

North American Aviation's X-15 was the most technologically advanced of all with a simply breathtaking performance. Pilots such as Scott Crossfield, William Knight, Neil Armstrong, Bill Dana and Milt Thompson would push the aircraft out to nearly Mach 7 at an altitude of 102,000ft while 8 of the 12 pilots involved in the program were awarded astronauts wings after attaining a height of 50 miles!
