Short’s Stirling was the first of the four-engined bombers but suffered from numerous inherent problems that limited its success in service. The worst of these was the limited service ceiling of only 16,000ft. Caused by a wingspan of 99ft, imposed by the air ministry so as the aircraft would fit into the hangars of the day, it meant that Stirling crews always had ‘A Long Haul’
