Operation Sail, normally shortened to OpSail is a gathering of sailing ships for a long run down the American continents in New York's harbour. Taking place between May 25 and July 31 2000, over 80 vessels attended, with the QE2 as a guest of honour.  


The OpSail organisation was inaugurated by John F. Kennedy with the event being convened for special celebrations. To date there have been OpSail events in 1964, 76, 86, 92, 2000 and 2012.


Tall-ships from all over the world are usually in attendance with ships from Italy, Argentina, Denmark, New Zealand and Germany among others taking part in the 2000 celebrations,
