Grumman F9F Panther Limited Edition Aviation Art Print by Aviation Artist Darryl Legg

Mainstay of U.S Navy fighter squadrons during the Korean War, Grumman's straight-wing F9F Panther was first delivered in 1949 and scored the USN's first air-to-air victory of the Korean War when an aircraft downed a North Korean Yak-9.

Outclassed by the Mig-15 in aerial combat the Panther made significant contributions to the ground-war with its not inconsiderable payload which could include bombs, rockets and napalm.

Suggested inferiority against swept-wing opposition was first muted in 1949 and when this was proved steps were quickly taken to equip the sound airframe of the F9F with swept wings resulting in the F9F-6 Cougar.

The aircraft in Darryl Legg's aviation art print are from VMF-781 flying from the USS Bon Homme Richard. In the foreground can be seen the F9F-2 of Lt. JG J.D. Middleton who would gain a MiG kill in 1952.
